Up

The biggest complaint I hear about board members is that they don’t do anything! Or they don’t do what they say they will do!

When that happens I know one of two things is wrong: the board members really don’t know what they’re supposed to do, or they haven’t made a significant commitment to do it.

A board pledge card helps. You need more than money from your board, so ask them to sign a pledge card for more than money. I’ve used this one for several years and found it very helpful!

Board Member Activity Pledge

Top 10 things that you, a committed board member, can do to ensure the success of your organization/school.

1. Give a gift that you would consider generous.

2. Remember your agency in your will.

3. Invite a friend to an event as your guest.

4. Add your address book to the agency’s database.

5. Be willing to sign solicitation letters to your contacts.

6. Go on solicitation calls with staff/other board leaders.

7. Chair a special event.

8. Ask two friends to join you in financially supporting an agency event or solicitation.

9. Make follow-up calls on grant proposals.

10. BRAG, BRAG, BRAG! Talk about your involvement in your organization and what great work it does.
