Phonathons: Everybody hates them, but they sure do work!

Large non-profits use the phones all the time. Why? Because calling is a cheap way to raise money.

Follow these simple tips to get the most for your phoning buck:

1. USE VOLUNTEERS! Nobody likes to call and nobody likes to be called. But volunteers can be had for the price of soda and pizza. Volunteers can establish their relationship to the charity at the beginning of the call and get the donor on their side.

2. Get good telephone numbers. Calling bad numbers makes for cranky volunteers. And guess who gets blamed?

3. Treat your volunteers like treasures. They are! Feed them, reward them, praise them.

4. Make sure the volunteers are well-trained and have a script that they can personalize. Nobody wants to listen to a monotoned caller reading from a script. Have the volunteer personalize their pitch with stories, experiences, etc.

5. Call only lapsed donors or prospects who know your organization well. Cold calling doesn’t work well for small lists.

6. Consider calling on Sunday night. Everybody will balk but your donors will be at home.

7. Line up enough volunteers and calls for at least three nights.
