Secrets of Successful Fundraising

Introduction

By Carol Weisman, Board Builders
Reprinted with permission

There has never been so much competition among nonprofits for the charitable dollar. This book is about choices and options. It is about getting past “we’ve always done it this way, we’ve tried that before, and its not my job.” This is not an “everything you’ve always wanted to know” book.

Many of the authors, such as Peter Brinkerhoff, Elaine Floyd and myself have other books out on their topics which describe the “how to” of social entrepreneurism, writing newsletters and governance in far greater detail.

Some of the authors you might want to contact directly for additional information or specific project help which is why we’ve included their contact information. Steve Epner, Jeane Vogel, Peter Brinkerhoff, Davis Allen, David LaGrecca Terrie Temkin, Mark Merrsman and Art Seltzer, Larry Checco and I have full time consulting practices. Steve Epner, Terrie Temkin, Peter Brinkerhoff, David LaGrecca and I are also on the speaking circuit. If you have a crowd and a check, we love to speak. (This is not to say that all of us don’t do some pro-bono work.)

As usual with these projects, the best part has been working with the Nonprofit Pros. This is not to say it has been without frustration. I find I start out as the Great Earth Mother, move to my Dominatrix mode and then end up as the Executioner. I leave myself notes i.e. ‘call the following authors and threaten them.” Despite these grumblings, I have enormous respect for my colleagues.

Folks ask me how I put the team of authors together. Some are old friends, like Stan Corfman who I’ve known for a million years from a Unitarian Retreat Center we go to in the summer. Peter Brinkerhoff and Steve Epner have been my mentors since I began my business. David LaGrecca and I met when we were both bidding the same job. (He got the job!) Jill Osur was in an audience I spoke to, asking fabulous questions. David Campbell and I met because we are on the faculty of the Learning Institute for Nonprofit Organizations together.

Some, like Jeane Vogel and Davis Allen, I’ve met because they have done a great job for my clients. Terrie Temkin wrote a marvelous article years ago which I forwarded to a client. I wrote her a fan letter and we became friends. The acquaintance of Elaine Floyd was one of the many gifts I’ve received from my membership in the National Speaker’s Association. The first time I may Larry Checco, he was in a tuxedo at a black tie dinner, the next time in a bathing suit. I can’t wait to see what he has on when we next meet! I heard Eleanor Cicerchi at a workshop and was awed by her knowledge of direct mail. Mary Ann Blank, Mike Schroeder and Kathleen King are both friends and clients. Mark Merrsman and Art Seltzer work with my pal Steve Epner. And finally, I have yet to meet Cele Garrett in person. We met over the phone when she was writing an article.

The team at Ad Graphics are an absolute joy to work with. They are either saints or have incredible medication bills. I think its probably the former.

Thanks as always to Babette Morgan for her excellent editing and to Dr. Sandy Sineff for his wonderful cartoon. And as always, a special thank you to my husband Frank Robbins who shares my delights when a particularly marvelous chapter comes in and listens to my rantings when things don’t go as plan.

Thanks to this incredible team, I think we have produced a book that will help you find more money for your mission.
